About Our Council

Bishop Kevin Britt Council was originally founded as Msgr. Raymond Sweeney Council in 1982 at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Msgr. Sweeney was a past State Chaplain and former pastor of St. Thomas.  At the time of the formation of this Council, the pastor of St. Thomas was Fr. James Cusack.  Fr. Cusack was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and very interested in the growth of the Knights of Columbus.  He was instrumental in the formation of new councils in his previous parishes.

More detail of how the Council has grown and changed from 1982 to today is being developed and will appear here at a future date.

The council name was changed shortly after the untimely death of Bishop Kevin Britt.  Bishop Britt was an avid member of the Knights of Columbus and became a 4th degree member at an exemplification many of our members attended.  The name was changed to honor his memory and dedication.  A fund providing for scholarships for seminarians is now named for Msgr. Sweeney.
